I've been active in the arts pretty much my entire life. Growing up, my home was filled with creativity; my dad's an accomplished painter and my mom has always harbored a great love for music and art and they passed it on down to their kids.
When I was a little, my parents saw my avid interest (and inclination to draw on any available space - including school tests and myself) and they gave me a sketch book for my birthday and things have just blossomed from there.
Officially, my main focus of study has been music, but my true love has always been art. I've been commissioned as an illustrator for kids books, a portrait painter, creator of center pieces for private parties and, most recently, a designer of kids clothes.
My aim is for the designs to express a whimsical and playful feel to reflect the essence of childhood. However, I also strive to branch out from the generic "pink princess" and "sports fan" designs that are so prevalent out there.
Every kid has their own personality, why not express it?
Summer is in full swing! We’ve got fireworks coming next week and I’ve got some family coming into town for a cookout. It’s a lovely season!
Another of my favorite seasons is Christmas. However, I also like to spread out my gift purchases over the year to give my wallet a break. So, this July, I’m sharing my love of summer and Christmas and I’m having a sale in my DazzlingDoOvers Etsy shop.
I’ve pulled out several holiday items and everything in my shop is 15% off! Just enter this coupon code at checkout: CHRISTMAS15
Slowly, but surely, I’m working to gather some creative momentum again. The past few months, I’ve organized my work space and made some good progress on some old projects that have been wanting for attention.
However, my first real foray back into the thick of things came as a custom order. This gentlemen reached out to me and was interested in a previous design – the Broccoli and Carrot friends. It seems these wonderful little figures have won many hearts!
I enlarged the design a bit so it would better fit on an adult sized shirt. They are even better at that size!
Here’s a peek at them in-progress:
And, complete – ready to be shipped:
I’m excited to send these off. What a wonderful way to get back into the swing of things!
Wow! It’s been long time since I’ve posted on this site. We’ve added a second baby to the family mix and that has definitely been an exciting addition. The little guy is about a year and a half now and I’m feeling like it’s time to get back to doing more things for me.
One of those things is to start organizing and sorting everything to reopen my two shops. It feels good to get back into things! Here’s a glance at some of the fun things going on behind the scenes.
First, things first: adding some more flavor to my work space. Here’s how things were originally.
Then I got a new work table, increasing my work space significantly. Woo!
Then, a few months back, I finally got around to putting up a gallery wall of my creative and fun pictures. These are pieces of artwork that I love and it gives the room some pop and energy. It really came together nicely!
After that, I reorganized my cabinets and put things all together along one wall. Here’s how things stand now:
All the changes have created a much better flow with the room and my work space. So ready to get moving with things!
I was approached by a happy, repeat customer about doing a custom design for her little girl and her friend. They are about the same age and they each have a beloved stuffed doll: (IKEA’s) Carrot Guy and Broccoli Man:
Aren’t these the most adorable things ever? I love IKEA.
So, we had a little back and forth, I sketched up a concept design that was just as she was envisioning them. Then I set to work and here they are, all completed:
One for each of them now, and one for them each to grow into!
Recently, someone reached out to me about doing a bit of a tweak to my birdy in the blossoms design. She was expecting a daughter and was planning to name her after the Black Canary (of DC Comics). A mighty namesake indeed!
Recently, I was approached by a lady asking for a sibling set for her twin boys. She’d fallen in love with the Party Llama, and was hoping I would be able to expand a little; a sort of variation on a theme. She suggested a Party Goose or maybe an Ostrich. The idea of a Party Ostrich tickled me greatly! And so we went with that.
Since her little guys are turning 4, she was justifiably leery of giving them white shirts to enjoy their party (and cake). So, we opted to dye the shirts. She chose a dusky blue and a soft green as well as individualized colors for the hats and noise makers. In order for the silhouettes to show up on the colored shirts, I made the gray darker than I generally do on the white onesies. And the bright colors for the hats and noise makers sure did pop!
Here they are, all done!
I love that ostrich so much! My new plan is to make a trio set of Party Animals: Llama, Ostrich and a Moose. Stay tuned for the complete set!
